HR Technical Elements

It may seem ‘odd’ to describe Human Resources as ‘technical’ because so many of the tasks associated with HR focuses on relationships:

  • With our employees,

  • Between employees,

  • With and between supervisors, employees, and others.

This is the ‘ART’ of connecting, communicating, engaging, and creating a culture that reflects your mission, vision, and values brought to life.

The technical aspect leans more towards the ‘science’ because many HR tasks focus on the owner’s organizational obligations and must be compliant with federal and provincial legislation or face serious consequences.

Being an employer of one employee (sole proprietor) or 20 (plus) employees is a significant responsibility. Combining the human relationships (the ‘art’) with the obligations (the ‘science’) can be confusing and time-consuming when you feel you DON’T have the time to learn it all on your own.

In this section, you will find guidance – not advice – to provide you, as a small-to-medium size business owner and leader of others, with basic topic-specific information in the Employee-Employer Life Cycle (Figure 1, below) to support you to feel more comfortable with these responsibilities. Topics covered to different degrees are:

Some key elements in each topic will be highlighted and additional resources provided for your further exploration. The author’s intention is to provide insight into ‘why’ we focus on these aspects of the workplace and to support you, the owner, in the growth and success of your enterprise.
